Features to Look for When Buying an Ultrawide Monitor

The key things you should be looking for when purchasing an ultrawide monitor depend on what you are using it for. If you are using it for work in an office setting then you will want the biggest screen size and resolution you can get to ensure that you will have enough screen real estate to fit all of your needed documents and applications on-screen at once. Another great choice for more space is to get the best bezel less monitor you can afford.

If you are more interested in a wide monitor for gaming purposes then you will be more interested in the refresh rate and response time of the monitor and the screen size shouldn’t be as important to you.

  • The Picture by Picture and Picture in Picture features make it much easier to multi-task by allowing you to view multiple applications at once.

  • The U3415W comes with a 3-year warranty so you don’t have to worry about your monitor being damaged after you purchase it.

  • The U3415W meets several eco-friendly and energy efficiency requirements including ENERGY STAR, TCO, and EPEAT.

Features USB Hub, Curved, Picture by Picture, 3-Year Warranty, Low Power Usage

The U3415W from Dell’s UltraSharp is an ultrawide curved monitor with LED backlighting that uses an IPS panel. It is a 34-inch screen and it has a resolution of 3440 by 1440 which means it is ideal for multitasking. If you are looking for a 4k ultrawide monitor for professional work then look no further.

Not only is this monitor excellent for multi-tasking due to its size and resolution, but it also comes with support for Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture so you can work on multiple things at the same time.

If you were considering using this monitor for gaming, you may want to reconsider. It has a 60 Hz refresh rate and a 5 millisecond response time, so it can be used for gaming, but if you are a serious gamer then you will want a monitor more dedicated to that task. It also doesn’t support any kind of syncing software, so if you are using this monitor with a very powerful machine you may notice some screen tearing or stuttering effects while gaming.

One of the main draws of this monitor, and something I found especially tantalizing, is that it is very energy efficient and has passed several different certification tests to ensure that it works with low power and should assist you in saving money on your electric bill each month. It has passed certifications from TCO, ENERGY STAR, and EPEAT which are all well-known monitor energy efficiency testers.

Pros

  • Sufficient for Low-end Gaming
  • Extremely Energy Efficient
  • Aids in Multitasking
  • Versatile Connectivity Options

Cons

  • Corner backlight bleeding

  • Screen Split software is implemented so you can take your efficiency to the next level with convenient multitasking capability.

  • The frame of the 29WK600-W is especially thin so that there is nothing to distract you from what you are seeing on the screen.

  • If you are a multi-display setup enthusiast then you will be pleased to know that it is VESA compatible.

  • The color accuracy of this monitor is excellent and shouldn’t disappoint even the most sensitive users.

If you are looking for the best budget ultrawide monitor then the 29WK600-W from LG Electronics should do the trick. It is a 29-inch lg ultrawide monitor and its native resolution is 2560 x 1080, which is smaller than the other options, but it makes up for that with its cheaper pricing. It comes with several features to assist with visual clarity and has multi-tasking functionality all at a relatively affordable price.

The response time of this monitor is nothing special at 5 milliseconds, but it has a better refresh rate than many other monitor options on this list and it also has support for FreeSync software which means it is a decent option for gaming, though it cannot compete with more dedicated devices when it comes to gaming. That said, if you just want the ability to do some casual gaming on the side, this monitor should serve nicely.

The frame of this monitor is especially thin and it also has compatibility with VESA mounting so there shouldn’t be any problems implementing this monitor in a setup with another identical monitor or perhaps mounting it on the wall behind your current setup. Either way, it is an excellent choice for that purpose.

Personally, I prefer a monitor with a thinner frame because I think a thick bezel detracts from the visual appeal of a monitor and I prefer to use more than one monitor at once. A thinner frame is more convenient for multi-monitor setups.

Pros

  • Mid-range Gaming Specs
  • Very High Color Accuracy
  • Well-Suited for Multi-Display Setups
  • Supports Multi-tasking Capabilities

Cons

  • No USB ports

3. Acer Predator Gaming X34 Pbmiphzx Curved 34” UltraWide

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Product Features

  • Includes an integrated USB hub for phone charging or peripheral connections.

  • It is compatible with VESA mounting if you prefer to mount your monitors on a wall or stand.

  • The stand that comes with the monitor allows for tilting, swiveling, and height adjustment so you can get the perfect viewing angle for your setup.

  • The X34 Pbmiphxz has Flicker-Free technology implemented to help reduce the strain on your eyes caused by long sessions on the computer.

  • Predator GameView is implemented and allows you to make detailed changes to your monitor display settings so that you can get the perfect look for your setup.

G-Sync / FreeSync G-Sync
Features USB Hub, VESA Compatible, Ergonomic Stand, Flicker-Free, Predator GameView

Ports / Connectivity

DisplayPort, HDMI

Acer’s X34 Pbmiphzx is the best ultrawide gaming monitor on this list. It is a larger screen at 34 inches and the resolution is nearly 4k at 3440 by 1440 which should make for an extremely high field of view advantage in whatever games you play. On top of that, it also has pretty decent gaming specs with a 100 Hz refresh rate and a 4-millisecond response time as well as G-Sync support.

Another interesting feature of this monitor is the speakers. It isn’t unusual to find speakers built into a monitor’s frame, but it is unusual to find ones that work well. The speakers on most monitors aren’t worth using due to the overall poor quality most of them have, but the X34 Pbmiphzx has decent speakers that could work well as a primary audio source. I will always prefer using a headset for my audio needs, but these speakers aren’t a bad substitute.

Unfortunately, the decent quality of the speakers can sometimes be drowned out by the noise produced by the fan installed into this monitor. I found it especially noisy and found it took away from the overall quality of the monitor.

Pros

  • VESA Mount Compatibility
  • Good Gaming Specs
  • Predator GameView for Visual Clarity
  • Flicker-Free Technology for Eye Strain

Cons

  • Noisy fan implemented in the frame

Conclusion:

Features Picture-in-Picture, Flicker-Free, Game Mode, Eye Saver Mode, Audio Out

Ports / Connectivity

HDMI, DisplayPort

Samsung’s SJ55W is a good monitor for office work and also can support a bit of gaming on the side. It is a 34-inch screen and has a 3440 by 1440 native resolution which should make for plenty of screen real estate to work with. It also supports picture-in-picture for viewing two or more applications at once.

It has eye protection software implemented and a Gaming Mode feature to optimize the visual settings when playing games. The specs for gaming are alright at 75 Hz refresh rate and a 4 millisecond response time.

I really appreciate the Eye Saver Mode because I spend long hours on the computer and this ensures that I can do so comfortably without having to worry about damage being caused to my eyes.

Pros

  • Has Eye Protection Software
  • Good Specs for Mid-range Gaming
  • Picture-in-Picture for Multi-tasking
  • Supports FreeSync Anti-tear Technology

Cons

  • Color accuracy and vibrancy are less than ideal

5. Dell U3417W FR3PK 34-Inch Screen Led-Lit Monitor

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Product Features

  • Security Locking Slot available to make it prohibitively inconvenient for anyone with nefarious intentions regarding your equipment.

  • The stand can swivel and tilt the screen so you can see it from anywhere. It can also adjust the height to match your seating position.

  • Use the Picture-in-Picture or Picture-by-Picture features to keep all of your applications visible and ready to work on at the same time.

  • The USB hub is available if you desperately need to charge your phone or quickly plug in a temporary peripheral device.

  • There is VESA compatibility for those multi-display and wall mounting enthusiasts.

Dell U3417W FR3PK Header
Screen Size 34 inches
Display Panel LED, In-Plane Switching (IPS)
Max. Resolution 3440 x 1440
Refresh Rate 60 Hertz
Response Time 8 – 5 ms
Aspect Ratio 21:9
Speakers Yes
G-Sync / FreeSync No
Features Security Lock Slot, Ergonomic Stand, Picture-by-Picture, USB Hub, VESA Compatible

Ports / Connectivity

HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort

The U3417W FR3PK from Dell is a good monitor for office work, but shouldn’t be used for gaming. It is a 34-inch monitor and has a native resolution of 3440 x 1440. Unfortunately, the response time is 8 milliseconds naturally or can be increased to 5 milliseconds by sacrificing visual clarity and smoothness. The refresh rate is locked at 60 Hz. Together, these qualities mean that this monitor is not a good choice for gamers.

An especially useful feature of this monitor is the security lock. I feel much safer using a monitor that can be locked to my table because it makes it much more difficult for someone to just walk in and take it while I’m not at home.

Pros

  • Safety Security Lock Slot
  • Ergonomic Stand for Ideal Viewing Angles
  • Multi-tasking Features Implemented
  • VESA Wall Mount Compatibility

Cons

  • Might be unreliable

Conclusion:

Is an Ultrawide Monitor Worth It?

If you prefer to use a single monitor over a multi-monitor setup then this could be the type of monitor for you. Having a big enough ultrawide monitor is similar to having two monitors set up right next to each other but with none of the problems that can come with switching between multiple monitors. This means you can get all of the multi-tasking benefits with none of the downsides.

Is an Ultrawide Monitor Best for Gaming?

Ultrawide monitors have their place in the gaming world. They are fantastic if you are interested in racing or flight simulator games because they offer an unparalleled viewing experience when simulating the windshield of a car or the cockpit of a plane.

They can also be a benefit when playing open-world Role-playing Games like Skyrim or Dragon Age because they allow you to see and take in more of the environment then you would otherwise be able to.

Certain shooter games will also benefit from you working with the best ultrawide monitor by offering you an opportunity to use a significantly increased field of view, so you can see more of your enemies and analyze more of the terrain at once.

How Can You Split the Screen on an Ultrawide Monitor?

Most ultrawide monitors come with some kind of screen splitting software already implemented so it should be a simple matter of just touching a few buttons to get your screen split properly.

In the cases where there isn’t a screen splitting option already implemented, you can find third-party software to do the trick, or if you’re on Windows you can use their screen snap feature to lock certain applications to different parts of your screen.

What Size of Ultrawide Monitor Is Best for Your Needs?

The size of the monitor that you need will be determined by the activities you are planning to perform on it and the reason that you are purchasing an ultrawide monitor in the first place. If you are getting it purely for its multi-tasking benefits then you will want as large of a screen as you can comfortably use. If you are getting it for gaming then a smaller screen size would be better because you can get higher specs for a cheaper price and you will have to turn your head less when using it.
