It’s not exactly the first time a release date has been alluded to, but this time Taleworlds made it official with an announcement video and everything. Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord will hit early access in March of 2020. Just another 7-months.
M&B II: Bannerlord is a game that a lot of people have been waiting a long time for. Taleworld’s first official announcement for Bannerlord came in September of 2012 and was accompanied by a short “teaser” trailer. The first time that a release date was alluded to, as far as I know, was during a PC Gamer presentation in 2016. During the Q&A portion of the presentation, the old community manager Frank Elliot mentioned, “We want to have it, in some form whether it’s beta or whatever we do, we want to have it in player’s hands this year. It’s not a guarantee, but that’s what we’re shooting for.”
I’m glad it wasn’t a guarantee because that 2016 release never happened. Since then, the release date of Bannerlord has been a complete mystery. That is, until now.
The reason for that being, according to a dev blog from 2017, “We have not disclosed a release date so far because it does not exist. We don’t work like that. We are not a company who sets a timeline to release a product and then works to meet that deadline.” It then goes on to say, “We are TaleWorlds Entertainment: we create games because we love making them, and we want them to be the best games that we can possibly make. We think that our fans don’t deserve less than our best efforts, our total commitment. We don’t believe in releasing a game before it is ready just because we might miss the hype.”
Now, we have a date, albeit for early access. But, something is better than nothing. At this stage, I’d be glad to play a rough alpha build. At the end of the day, I suppose 7-months isn’t that long to wait.
