Star Citizen – Now you can buy land too

Updated: April 8th, 2018By: BrantonGaming & News2 Comments

Star Citizen, one of the largest crowdfunding projects ever, is getting another crowdfunding option in the form of digital real estate. Rather, beacons which can be used to claim land within UEE space once the mechanic goes live.

The prices run at $50 for a basic 4x4km lot or $100 for an 8x8km estate. Right now, you can only purchase what’s called a Land Claim License and not an actual chunk of land; once the feature goes live (eventually…) then everyone will be able to go scouting for land to stake their claims on.

A Land Claim License gets you an option to build in UEE policed space on a planet, moon, or even an asteroid. This means your claim will be monitored, but other players could still raid your land and steal some resources or even wreck building. Claims can also be bought with UEC (the in-game currency) and there will even be an option to lease land opposed to buying it outright – leasing will probably be the best option for new players.

It’s worth noting that pre-purchasing a Land Claim License does not give you a direct advantage over other players when it comes to claiming your plot(s) of land. Yes, it gives more affluent gamers the ability to buy a lot of land very quickly; outside of that, no one can claim land before anyone else. This is all addressed more in the official Land Claim License Q&A.

Pretty much all of the land will be purchasable within UEE space, outside of specific national parks, wildlife refuges, and nature preserves which cannot be claimed or (legally) exploited for their resources. If the actual scope of the galaxy is anything like what we’ve been told, running into the issue of another player claiming land you wanted should be pretty rare.

To actually build your outpost, you’ll need the assistance (or services) of a player with a Pioneer mobile construction yard if you don’t have one yourself. Due to how insanely expensive they are ($750) the services of anyone with one are going to be in very high demand once this mechanic goes live.

You don’t necessarily even need a certificate of claim to build an outpost either. Outside of UEE space, anyone can build, mine, or raid at will, but this is entirely “at your own risk” as there are no security forces to help you out.

Personally, I’m pretty excited about the announcement of the land management feature. Being able to buy land with money is another thing, but it’s really not that different than buying ships with money either. Also, I would imagine that once SC finally releases, the option to buy anything with real money will be removed and everything will have to be purchased with in-game currency.
